Kauri Dieback

LI: To learn more about the kauri dieback.

While we were at camp we went on a walk and we all learnt about the disease Kauri Dieback. Kauri Dieback is a disease that harms kauri trees by going into the soil and harming the roots. We made a DLO that explains the 4 main questions. How it started?, How it spreads?, How it can be contained/stopped?, Why we need to work together to ensure this is contained/stopped/ fixed?.

I found this activity intresting because I learnt the effects of kauri dieback.

A Momment In Time

LI: To recount and explore the learning and experiences from our Year 7/8 camp

Our group wrote a poem based on our senses like auditory, tactile, visual, and kinesthetic. We used our prior knowledge of the senses and unpacked different words and ideas that describes the Hunua Falls. These moment in time poems represent our experience at Kokako Lodge. One of our ideas were I wondered anxiously if I would capsize into the deep dark temperate murky water below, imagining being swallowed by the mysterious water gives me the shivers. we then used word hippo to find more powerful words to strengthen our poems.

I found this activity intresting because I used words qto describe what it was felt like doing the camp activites.

Statistical Investigation

LI: To read the text, gather sort, graph and analyse the data

Our math group created a diagram which shows the top six rivers in Auckland from smallest to largest. We used our collaborative skills to find out the data of each river. We put these rivers in this order from shortest to longest. We used our knowledge to come to the conclusion on what river is the longest out of the 6 rivers in Auckland, which is Wahu River (6km),Puhoi River(13km), Tamaki River (15km), Waitakere River(16km), Hoteo River(28km), Wairoa River(65km).

I found this activity enjoying because I used my analysation skills to figure out what the top 6 longest rivers are.

Collage

LI: To create a collage of photos to represent our experience at Kokako Lodge.

Our class created a collage of Photos representing the time and experience we had at Kokako Lodge. The photos show our achievements and fun we had while at camp. My most exciting activity was kayaking.

I found this activity interesting because of all the highlights I had while at camp.

Digital Escape Room

LI: to create a digital escape that allows other to practise their knowledge of prefixs and suffixs.

This week I learnt how to create a digital escape room using Google forms. All my questions are on the affixes because writing the questions/answers and wrong answers really made me think about all the I would write the question to unlock the lock.

I found this activity exciting because of all the escape rooms I had tried. Most of them were challenging because of the last code part. It made me think a bit. I had to change my code because my friends tried my escape room.

Mrs Anderson has created a page on our site with all our escape rooms on it. Click on this link to crack our codes and increase your knowledge of affixes.

Riley – Who has Faced Difficlutes

LI: Who has a positive attitude despite difficulties they have faced.

Lebron James has had rollercoaster of journey, some high and some low. Lebron James started with no father – figure in his life. Most of his motavition came from Mum, who stood by Lebron’s side through out the journey. When he went to highschool he was waterboy for the high school basketball team. Then he said ” I want to try out for the basketball team”. He made it and he lead his team to 3 national championships. He took his talents to the NBA and with the top pick in the 2003 NBA draft the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Lebron James. He was on the bench for a few seasons but then he became a starter. In 2012 he won his first championship for the Miami Heat and would later on would win championships with many different teams and teamates . His son Bronny James is set to carry on his father’s legacy.

I found this activity interesting because I found out that the best basketball player grew up poor.

Main Idea

LI: To identify the main ideas in the text

This week we have been learning how to find and collaboratively decide on the main idea in a text by negotiating. We read the text Lester and Clyde. This was a text about the consequences of pollution. Our group think the main idea was raise awareness that one piece of rubbish could destroy the habitats of living animals and that your Actions causes consequences.

We found this activity interesting because we negotiated about which sentence was the main idea.

Word Building

LI: To build words from a base word using prefixes and suffixes.

This week we have been learning how words are built from a base word using suffixes and prefixes. A base word is a complete word by itself that changes when you add a prefix or suffix. A prefix is letters placed before the root word to change the words meaning. A prefix The suffixs is letters placed after the root word to change the words meaning. Our challenge is to see how many words we could make from one base word. In this DLO the word we used was ‘excite’.

The prefix over+ the base word, excite= overexcite which means to be more than normally enthusiastic.

We found this activity enjoying because I tested putting prefixes such as un or over and suffixs such as ed, ing and ly.

What is a River?

LI:To identify and describe the features of the Tamaki River.

This week we have been learning about what rivers are, their unique attributes and how to label them. We then created a DLO about the Tamaki river and its history. Did you know that the Tamaki River is 15 km long. Using our knowledge that we learnt, we showed the features of the Tamaki river using an aerial map. We then compared the Tamaki River with the Mississippi River. Our group chose to look at the Mississippi River because most of the students in LS2 were picking the Nile and the Amazon so our group decided that we were going to pick a river that was famous and no one else was using. Finally we made a comparison of the two rivers. Did you know that the Mississippi River is 4 times as large? The Mississippi River is 3,766km long which is 2,320 miles.

We found this activity interesting because we learnt about the many types of water sources such as, Lakes, reservoirs, Rivers, Dams, Ponds and many more.
