Duffy Celebration

Today we had a big celebration for Duffy’s 30th Birthday. Duffy books in Homes are a big company that lets Kiwi Kids have the opportunity to love books. This also led kids to explore there imagination and expand there vocabulary and creativty. In our school we celebrated Duffy’s 30th Birthday by have a portrait of Duffy painted by a group in LS2, Delicous Cake, Party Poppers and Beauitiful decorating. Duffy Books in Homes are a big company but we have know were they started. So in 1992 Alan Duff vistied a school in Hastings where he found out that all the kids didn’t have any books, but Alan wanted to do something about this and then this is where the Duffy Books in Homes started.

I enjoyed this day because I learnt the values and why its important to have Duffy Books in Homes.

Duffy Boxes

In this activity we created a Duffy Box that will be used for all of our Duffy Books. I used zentangle design and cultural patterns for the sides and we also chose what the best patterns were for our box. I think this is a great idea for all kids to have somewhere to put our Duffy Books because personally I lose all of my Duffy Books so now I have a place to put my books

I enjoyed this activity was awesome because I learnt what the importance are to have Duffy books in homes.

In this first Comrades Marathon in 1921 only 34 people attended fast forward to today threre are more than 23,000 people. This shows there respect and gratitude to all the fallen soldiers.

Rosie Ruiz l Reading

LI: To make connections (text, world)

LI: LI: To find information (facts) and retell it in less words

LI: To make inferences about the events in the text using the clues provided by the author.

In this text we learnt how Rosie Ruiz faked the boston marathon in 1980. We also learnt to collaborate as a group, to talk as a group and to include everyone. We got some questions wrong but I think we learnt from our mistakes and got them right at the end. I found out that Rosie Ruiz cheated twice. Once in in the 1979 New York marathon by using a subway and in 1980 Boston marathon.

I found this activity interesting because we had trial and error.

Born to Run

LI: To make connections (self, text, world)
LI: To identify the main ideas – negotiation game
LI: To make inferences about the events in the text using the clues provided by the author.
LI: To practise skimming and scanning by looking for key words in the text when answering questions

Our guided reading text was Born to Run. We worked collaboratively as a group to unpack the text and answer questions using evidence from the text to support our thinking. We also used reading skills to help us find more detail in our answers. I used the skimming and scanning skill because it help me find answers through the book.  All our responses were written in the comments tool.  This book was about a man named Arthur Lydiard who was an Olympic runner for New Zealand. Arthur Lydiard  believed that there were champions everywhere, they just had to be trained the right way.

Something I found interesting about this text was that Arthur Lydiard legacy still carrys on to this day. He even has a running group in South Africa.

Information Report – The Bengal Swamp Tiger

LI: To write an information Report that tells the reader about the Bengal Swamp Tiger.

In this activity we wrote a information report Swamp Tigers. We first wrote down notes. We used our smart searching skills to find notes to help us get an idea of what we need. We wrote our own information report and used it in our own words. An information Report tells the reader about a chosen topic by providing the reader with facts.

The Swamp Tiger, Unique, Terrifying, Incredible and an overall jaw dropping creature. Known as Panthera Tigris Tigris, These wonderful creatures are on the brink of extinction and are critically endangered. Not many people know that they inhabit the mangrove forest which runs between the Bangladesh and Indian border.

The Swamp Tiger has a large, muscular and powerful build. These creatures use their orange and black fur to help them camouflage in their habitat. The Swamp tiger uses its rapid feet to hunt down their prey. Did you know that these beasts weigh up to 180 kgs?

These beasts are carnivores which only eat meat. Their diet consists of Deers, Boars, Buffalos, Wild Cats, Crabs, Fish and On some occasions Humans. Are you aware that 100 fishermen die each year due to these predators hunting the fishermans. An interesting fact that I found is that the Bengal Swamp tigers would go after anything that is alive or moving.

The Swamp Tiger lives in a mangrove forest. These Mangrove Forest feel These feisty animals like to live in humid and wet climates and even like water which is unusual. The Swamp Tigers have adapted to their habitat and have included fish in their diet.

These animals enjoy being solitary which means being alone. They mark out their territory and use this area as their home. Not many people know that these predators are nocturnal hunters which means they only hunt at night.

The Swamp Tiger are wonderful, fascinating and an incredible creature. If we keep on expanding our cities and building into the Swamp tigers habitat. These tigers will start to get very limited. Do you agree?

Swamp Tigers

LI: To create a multi-mode DLO that tells others about swamp tigers.

We learned and reaseacrhed about The Bengel Swamp Tiger. We watched video to get an idea of what a Bengel Tiger is. We recorded notes and we selected the important information and rejected the useless information. We found out that the Swamp Tigers are 6 ft and only feed of meat. We also found that the scientific name for a swamp tiger is Panthera Tigiris Tigiris. Are you aware that 100 fisherman die every year due to these hunter – gather animals. Are you also aware that the swamp tiger are on the brink of extiction.

I enjoyed this activity because I enjoyed this learning about the outdoors.
